Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Telegram, answered step by step.

1. Getting Started with Telegram

How do I create a Telegram account and get started?

  1. Download and install the Telegram app from the official Apps page on your preferred device platform, whether it is Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, or Linux.
  2. Open the Telegram application after installation is complete, and you will be greeted with a welcome screen that explains the core features of the messaging platform.
  3. Enter your mobile phone number in the international format with country code. Telegram will send a verification code via SMS to confirm your phone number ownership.
  4. Enter the verification code you received via SMS into the app. If you do not receive the code within a few minutes, you can request a phone call verification instead.
  5. Set up your profile by adding your first name, last name, and an optional profile photo. This information will be visible to your contacts and other Telegram users.
  6. Grant Telegram permission to access your contacts so the app can automatically sync and show which of your existing contacts are already using Telegram for messaging.

How do I add contacts and start my first conversation?

  1. After setting up your account, tap the contacts icon in the bottom navigation bar or the compose button to access your contact list and start a new conversation.
  2. If you have already synced your phone contacts, Telegram will display a list of people who are already registered on the platform with their profile names and photos.
  3. To add a contact manually, use the search bar at the top of the contacts list. You can search by username, phone number, or name if they are already in your address book.
  4. Tap on the contact you wish to message. This will open a new chat window where you can type your first message using the text input field at the bottom of the screen.
  5. You can also attach photos, videos, documents, voice messages, stickers, and location sharing directly from the chat interface using the attachment button next to the text field.
  6. Your message will be delivered instantly. A single check mark means sent, two check marks mean delivered and read. You can also see when your contact is typing in real time.

2. Privacy & Security

How does Telegram protect my messages and personal data?

  1. Telegram uses the MTProto 2.0 protocol, which is a custom-built encryption protocol designed specifically for secure messaging with a focus on both speed and reliability.
  2. All data transmitted between your device and Telegram servers is encrypted using a combination of AES-256 symmetric encryption, RSA 2048 encryption, and Diffie-Hellman key exchange.
  3. Secret Chats use end-to-end encryption, meaning only you and the recipient can read the messages. Not even Telegram servers can access the content of Secret Chat conversations.
  4. Enable Two-Step Verification in Settings to add an extra layer of security to your account. This requires a confirmation code from another logged-in device when signing in on a new device.
  5. Set up a passcode or use biometric authentication such as fingerprint or face recognition to lock the Telegram app itself, preventing unauthorized access even if someone has your unlocked phone.
  6. Regularly review your active sessions in Settings to see all devices where your account is logged in. You can terminate any suspicious or unused sessions with a single tap to protect your account.

How do self-destructing messages and Secret Chats work?

  1. Secret Chats are end-to-end encrypted conversations that use a different infrastructure from regular cloud chats. They are device-specific and are not stored on Telegram cloud servers.
  2. To start a Secret Chat, open a contact profile, tap the three-dot menu or options button, and select Start Secret Chat. The chat bubble will change color to indicate it is now a Secret Chat.
  3. Set a self-destruct timer for your messages by tapping the clock icon in the message input field. Choose a duration from one second to one week depending on your privacy needs and preferences.
  4. Once the timer expires after the message has been read, the message is permanently deleted from both devices. The deletion is irreversible and neither party can recover the deleted content afterward.
  5. Secret Chats also support self-destructing photos and videos. These media files are displayed in a special viewer that prevents screenshots on most platforms and disappears after viewing.
  6. If either participant takes a screenshot in a Secret Chat, the other person will be immediately notified. This feature helps maintain trust and accountability between conversation participants.

3. Multi-Device Synchronization

How do I use Telegram on multiple devices simultaneously?

  1. Telegram is designed as a cloud-based messenger, which means all your regular chats, media, and files are stored securely in the cloud and synced across all your devices in real time.
  2. Install Telegram on each device you want to use. You can install it on smartphones, tablets, desktop computers, and even access it through a web browser without any additional software.
  3. Log in to your account on each device using the same phone number. Telegram will send a verification code to one of your existing active sessions to confirm the new login attempt.
  4. Once logged in, all your cloud chats, contacts, groups, and channels will automatically sync and appear on the new device. You do not need to manually transfer any data between devices.
  5. Messages you send or receive on one device will instantly appear on all other devices. The sync happens in real time through Telegram's distributed network of data centers around the world.
  6. Note that Secret Chats are device-specific and will not sync to other devices. This is by design since Secret Chats use end-to-end encryption and are not stored on Telegram cloud servers.

How do I manage and terminate active sessions on my devices?

  1. Navigate to Settings in the Telegram app and then select Devices or Active Sessions to view a complete list of all devices where your account is currently logged in and active.
  2. Each session entry shows the device name, operating system, approximate location based on IP address, and the last activity timestamp to help you identify each logged-in device clearly.
  3. If you notice any unfamiliar or suspicious session that you do not recognize, tap on it immediately and select Terminate Session to instantly log out that device from your account.
  4. You can also use the Terminate All Other Sessions option to log out of every device except the current one. This is useful if you suspect your account may have been compromised.
  5. Enable login notifications in Settings to receive an alert whenever your account is logged into from a new device. This helps you detect unauthorized access attempts early and take action quickly.
  6. Set up Two-Step Verification to ensure that any new login attempt requires approval from an existing session. This prevents unauthorized users from accessing your account even if they know your password.

4. Groups & Channels

How do I create and manage a Telegram group?

  1. Tap the compose or new message button in the Telegram app, then select New Group from the menu options. This will open the group creation interface where you can begin setting up your community.
  2. Select the contacts you want to add to the group from your contact list. You can add up to 200,000 members in a single group, making Telegram groups ideal for large communities and organizations.
  3. Enter a descriptive group name and optionally add a group photo. The group name should clearly represent the purpose of the group so that members can easily identify it in their chat list.
  4. Choose the group type: basic group or supergroup. Supergroups offer advanced features such as admin permissions, pinned messages, public links, detailed analytics, and a message history visible to new members.
  5. Configure admin permissions by assigning specific roles to trusted members. You can control who can post messages, add members, pin messages, manage invites, delete messages, and edit group information.
  6. Set group rules and guidelines by posting them as a pinned message at the top of the chat. Use the built-in slow mode, anti-spam bots, and restricted permissions to maintain a healthy community environment.

What are Telegram Channels and how do I create one?

  1. Channels are a powerful broadcast tool on Telegram that allow you to send messages to an unlimited audience. Unlike groups, only admins can post in channels while subscribers read and react to content.
  2. To create a channel, tap the compose button and select New Channel. Choose whether to make it public with a shareable link or private with invite-only access depending on your target audience and content strategy.
  3. Set a channel name, description, and profile photo. The description should clearly communicate the channel's purpose and what type of content subscribers can expect to receive from your broadcasts.
  4. Share your channel link with your audience through social media, websites, email newsletters, or other marketing channels. Public channels can be found through Telegram's global search feature by anyone.
  5. Use the built-in analytics tool available in channel settings to track subscriber growth, view counts per post, read rates, sharing statistics, and engagement metrics to optimize your content strategy over time.
  6. Enable discussion by linking a group chat to your channel. This allows subscribers to comment on and discuss each post in a dedicated group, creating a two-way communication channel for community engagement.

5. Files & Media Sharing

How do I share large files and media on Telegram?

  1. Telegram allows you to send files of any type with a maximum size of up to 4GB per file, which is significantly larger than most other messaging platforms and cloud storage services available today.
  2. To send a file, tap the attachment icon in the chat input area and select File from the menu. Browse your device storage to find the document, video, photo, or any other file type you wish to share.
  3. You can also send files as documents to preserve the original quality without compression. This is especially important for photos and videos where you want to maintain the full resolution and metadata.
  4. All files sent through Telegram are stored in the cloud, which means you can access them from any of your devices at any time. Your file history is synced and available across all platforms seamlessly.
  5. Use the built-in media player to watch videos and listen to audio files directly within the Telegram app without needing to download them first. You can also adjust playback speed for audio and video content.
  6. Organize shared files using the shared media tab in any chat. This tab provides a searchable gallery of all photos, videos, files, links, audio files, and voice messages shared in the conversation for easy access.

How does Telegram's cloud storage work for media and files?

  1. Telegram provides unlimited cloud storage for all your messages and media. There is no limit on the total amount of data you can store, and all content is accessible from any device at any time.
  2. When you send a photo or video, you can choose to compress it for faster sharing or send it as a file to preserve original quality. Compressed media is optimized for quick loading on mobile devices.
  3. Use the Saved Messages feature as your personal cloud storage. Forward or send any file, photo, or note to Saved Messages to store it privately in your account. Only you can access this personal space.
  4. Telegram's global network of data centers ensures fast access to your files regardless of your geographic location. Files are distributed across multiple regions for optimal download speeds and reliability.
  5. You can search through all your media and files using the global search feature. Filter results by chat, file type, date range, or sender to quickly find specific content stored in your Telegram cloud.
  6. Manage your storage by clearing cache in Settings to free up device space without losing any data. Your files remain safely stored in the cloud and can be re-downloaded whenever you need them again.

6. Customization & Themes

How do I customize the look and feel of Telegram?

  1. Open Telegram Settings and navigate to Chat Settings or Appearance to access the full range of visual customization options available for personalizing your messaging experience on the platform.
  2. Choose from a variety of built-in color themes including Day, Night, and tinted variations. You can also switch between light and dark mode manually or set it to follow your device system settings automatically.
  3. Customize the chat background by selecting from preset patterns or uploading your own image. The background applies to all chats and can be adjusted for opacity to ensure text remains clearly readable.
  4. Adjust font size and text scaling in the appearance settings to make messages easier to read. This is particularly useful for users who prefer larger text or need accessibility adjustments for visual comfort.
  5. Install custom themes created by the community by tapping on theme links shared in channels, groups, or by other users. These themes can completely transform the color scheme, layout, and visual style of the app.
  6. Create and share your own custom themes using the built-in theme editor. Adjust individual color values for every UI element including bubbles, backgrounds, text, links, buttons, and navigation elements throughout the app.

How do I use custom emoji, stickers, and animated stickers?

  1. Telegram offers an extensive library of sticker packs that you can browse and add from the sticker panel in any chat. Tap the sticker icon next to the message input field to open the sticker panel and explore available packs.
  2. Search for sticker packs by keyword, category, or creator name using the search bar in the sticker panel. You can find packs for every mood, occasion, holiday, and interest from both official and community creators.
  3. Custom emoji are available for Telegram Premium users and can be used in messages, profile names, and bio fields. Custom emoji can be animated and come in thousands of designs from various artist-created packs.
  4. Animated stickers use the .TGS format based on Lottie technology. These are lightweight vector animations that are much smaller in file size compared to GIF or video alternatives while maintaining smooth quality.
  5. Create your own sticker packs using the @Stickers bot on Telegram. You can upload static images, animated stickers, or video stickers. The bot guides you through the entire creation and submission process step by step.
  6. Organize your sticker packs by reordering them in the sticker panel. Drag and drop to rearrange the order so your most frequently used packs appear first for quick and easy access during conversations.
